Boxing is one of the most demanding sports. A boxer needs to be strong, fast, smart and have the endurance to fight fatigue. If they get tired in the ring the fight will not last very long.
It takes a lot of skill to be a good boxer; countless hours to learn proper form and technique. In addition, fighters must be fit enough to use the skills they learned to last through all three rounds.
Olympic boxing is different from boxing at the professional level. There are only three 3-minute rounds in Olympic boxing. The focus is more on the technical aspect of boxing, scoring points, rather than trying to knock out an opponent. With only three rounds of boxing, there is a speed and urgency to these matches that professional bouts do not have.
To train, boxers use different equipment in the gym and practice mock fights, called “sparring.” Heavy bags are used to develop punching power and endurance. Boxers also practice fight scenarios with punching mitts and sparring. Sparring is practice against an opponent while wearing full protective gear. The coach is always present to encourage the fighters to work on technique and boxing strategy.
Boxing helps develop physical and mental toughness. It requires dedication, determination, hard work, and a lot of conditioning. However, the rewards are immeasurable.
